50 Organic Gandules or Pigeon Peas. Pigeon Peas, Tuver, Tuvar, Tuuar, Cajanus cajun, Congo peas, Gunga peas, Gandules, Arahar seeds Pigeon Peas are actually a bean. However, they are called peas due to their small size and shape. These beans are about 1/4 round, beige color with light brown speckles. The Pigeon Pea has a pungent flavor and mealy texture. Some color fades after beans have been cooked. They are also known as Toor Dal, Caja Pea, Congo Pea, Gandule and Goongoo pea. In the U.S., they are very popular in the south. They grown in long, twisted, fuzzy pods. Tall growing bushes reaching upto 6 ft or higher. Pegion peas are staple of SouthEast Asia, Middle-east and South American cusine. Pigeon peas are both a food crop (dried peas, flour, or green vegetable peas) and a forage/cover crop. Pigeon peas make a well-balanced meal and hence are favoured by nutritionists as an essential ingredient for balanced diets. It is an important source of protein in a mostly vegetarian diet. Use the tender ripe peas like fresh beans and the dried peas as lentils to make Daal soup. Pigeon Pea helps fix soil nitrogen. Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing for faster germination. Direct sowing recommended but if you have shorter season, grow them indoor 4 weeks before last frost. Direct-sown seed is easier and the plants will catch up to the seedlings in no time. The seeds will not germinate well in cold soil and the young plants can be killed by a late frost. Plant seeds 1 inch deep, spaced about 4 feet apart. They can be a perennial in frost-free climate zones; however, in other zones it grows as an annual crop.
