Malaysian and Singaporean like to apply the Kaya Jam onto toast, Kaya and usually butter or margarine are spread on two pieces of preferably toasted bread although any untoasted bread can be used and ready to serve. History of Kaya Jam: It was the Hainanese people who came up with the idea of the Kaya Toast. Many Hainanese worked on British ships as kitchen hands. So when they settled down in Malaya, they started selling the foods which they prepared for the British. So they introduced coffee, toast and French toast to the local population. Instead of using jams and preserves, they used the local coconut jam in their toast. Thus was born Kaya Toast.
